Virtual gatherings

JanOWriMo —  Our own creation, January: Our Writing Month, is for those of us who write after the holidays. We’re kicking off 2016 with a month-long writing marathon with few rules and lots of self-set goals. Follow us at http://janowrimoblog.wordpress.com/

NaNoWriMo — National Novel Writing Month is November. It’s a free “gathering” of authors from across North America, with a few more from other spots on the globe. The idea is to write a 50,000-word first draft of a book (not just a novel, despite the name) in a month. Learn more at http://nanowrimo.org/.

Camp NaNoWriMo — For folks who can’t manage time to write in November, there are two sessions of Camp NaNoWriMo to try. They are in April and July and have the same 50,000-word goal. Learn more at https://campnanowrimo.org/sign_in.

JuNoWriMo – June Novel Writing Month is an independent “spin-off” of NaNo. Smaller in scale, it is international in scope and has the same goal, a 50,000-word book in 30 days. Learn more at http://junowrimo.com/.

Area writers’ groups

We aren’t the only game in town — well, actually we are the only game at Lake Summerset. But there are a few other area writers’ groups, too.

ABC Writers is a group of writers and illustrators of children’s through young adult books. They meet on the fourth Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. in the Freeport Public Library. Find meeting dates on the library calendar at http://www.freeportpubliclibrary.org/. Click on Calendar of Events at the top of the page.

In Print Professional Writers Organization meets on the second Saturday of the month at 1 p.m. at the Rockford Public Library East Branch (on East State Street) — inprintwriters.org.

OWLS (Ogle Winnebago Literary Society) novels group meets the first Friday of the month at 1 p.m. in various restaurants in Ogle and Winnebago counties. (Join them at 12:30 if you want to have lunch first). — http://owlswrite.org/

Mississippi River Writers offer several events throughout the year, generally in Freeport. — https://www.facebook.com/MississippiRiverWriters

If you know of another area writers’ group, please drop us a note at lswritinggals@gmail.com.
